Exeter

Exeter, NH is a small town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. The population was 16,049 at the 2020 census. The population was 14,306 at the 2010 census. In the past, the town served as the county seat. The county offices were moved to neighboring Brentwood. Now, the town has a population of about 10,000. The American Independence Museum contains original drafts of the U.S. Constitution. You can tour the grounds of the Ladd-Gilman House and see artifacts from the town’s time as the state capital. In 1789, President George Washington visited the Folsom Tavern in Exeter and later earned his freedom. Today, Exeter’s American Independence Museum is home to a free Black community and hosts a free state holiday festival every July.

The historic town of Exeter is home to many historical sites, including the 1855 Exeter Town Hall. The town’s iconic building is still used for public events and is often rented as an “open forum” during the year. In 1855, a statue of Lady Justice was installed in the cupola of the Exeter Town Hall. This statue was placed on the cupola to honor the famous English city.
